I think that all people deserve a certain about of respect just for being human beings (that respect including common courtesy and respect
for their basic human rights - and even that can be lost under certain circumstances) and that all other respect needs to be earned.
I believe that when a good Christian says "love thy neighbor" they are talking about concern for their
neighbor's happiness rather than respect specifically. According to the gospels Jesus taught that the second greatest commandment was to "love your
neighbor as yourself". I believe that means to consider other people's happiness to be as important as our own.
