Here is something that I posted a long time ago (at MOL)
to illustrate the type of semantics problems I am talking about:
B39: Hi there Flux, how's it going?
Flux: Not so good, I had to go to court.
B39: Court? That doesn't sound so bad.
Flux: Doesn't sound so bad? I had to go downtown to the courthouse.
B39: Well, why didn't you say so?
Flux: I did say so.
B39: No, you didn't. You said you went to court.
A court is an open space surrounded by walls or buildings.
Flux: I didn't mean that kind of court. I meant a court of law.
I had to go before a judge.
B39: A judge? Did you win your competition?
Flux: It wasn't that kind of judge. I was on trial. I was charged with jaywalking.
B39: Don't you mean "charged for jaywalking"?
Flux: No, I mean "charged with jaywalking". They accused me of jaywalking.
B39: But to charge someone is to make them pay a price for something.
Flux: I didn't have to pay a price for it. My lawyer defended me.
B39: Defended you? Why? Did someone attack you there?
Flux: No, no one attacked me there.
B39: Then why did he have to defend you? To defend is to protect from harm.
Flux: No, I mean that he argued in my defense. He pleaded my case.
B39: Why would anybody want to plead with a case? A case is merely a type of container.
Flux: I suppose I shouldn't mention that there was a hung jury.
B39: A hung jury?
Flux: Oh, never mind. How are you doing today?
B39: Me? I guess I'm fine.
Flux: Yes, you certainly are fine. As for me, I'm pretty broad.
B39: You don't look like a pretty broad to me.
