"Isn't loving your neighbour doing unto to him all the things you would have done to you? Doesn't that include respect?"
Respect implies value, worthiness.
We all have a certain amount of value just because we are human, but to deserve any more respect than that we must be worthy of it. We earn other people's respect when they recognize our worthiness.
To put it in terms of "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" (reciprocity): I expect people to give me the respect I deserve just for being a human being and I give it to them as well. Beyond that, I do not expect anyone to give me any more respect than I deserve and I do not give them any more respect than they deserve either.
