Here is a rule of thumb for evaluating arguments: First, check to see if it is valid (the conclusion necessarily follows from the premises). Then, if it is valid, examine the premises. Learn to recognize if an argument fails because it is invalid (the conclusion does not necessarily follow from the premises or it contains some other logical fallacy) or simply because one or more of the premises are untrue. I have often seen people point to other people's arguments and say "That's not logical" (implying that the argument was invalid) when what they really meant was they didn't agree with the premises.
